Joan Waier Memorial Endowed Scholarship (Fall)

Business, Education, Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, University Center

As a potential and shining first-generation college student Joan experienced the same hurdles to access higher education then as today’s generation such as lacking college guidance counseling teams, a peer network, and financial resources.  Today’s easy access to career exploration, higher education information, and financial aid applications at our fingertips did not exist in the 1950s.  Without mentorship, guidance counseling staff, or a network of college peers she entered the working world. She often provided childcare throughout the years providing learning experiences for each of them.

A purposeful and focused woman, she devoted her time to her family, recognizing the value of a small circle of drama-free friendships. Joan took great pride in her agricultural roots, as her family had a farm in Whitelaw, Wisconsin.

LGBT, gay, lesbian, transgender, ally, pride

The Sue Farrey Pride Memorial Scholarship has been created by Leonard J. Behnke in memory of his aunt, Sue Farrey to provide financial support to Blackhawk Technical College students.

Sue Farrey was a very special and amazing soul. She found joy in helping those in need--donating proceeds from selling her famous homemade banana bread and handmade jewelry. She never ran out of love to give, frequently taking in people as her "adopted" nieces, nephews, brothers, and sisters. She was a nature lover. She enjoyed feeling her bare feet in the earth. She often passed on the knowledge of plants and animals she had learned from her dad onto her own children. She saw the beauty in the sky, never failing to appreciate sunsets, the stars, and thunderstorms. She was a talented singer and baker. She loved her crafts: jewelry, doll clothes, and scrapbooking. She had a wicked sense of humor--She was always telling jokes to make people laugh. Without a doubt, she left a massive positive mark behind for those who knew and loved her. We will never forget the lessons she taught us, the twinkle of mischief in her eyes, or the love we all felt from her. Her spirit will be dancing every night in the sunset. Sue was a very involved ally to the LGBT community in Iowa and Wisconsin and supported everyone she met.

While the traditional path of a four-year university was pressed hard upon him in high school, Ted decided what was best for him was Blackhawk Technical College. After taking a semester off after high school graduation, Ted began his Blackhawk courses in the machine shop program and eventually pursuing courses in the Industrial Engineering program.

Ted worked for Panoramic, Inc., a leading provider of thermoformed rigid plastic products, headquartered in Janesville, Wisconsin, starting from his co-op opportunity his senior year of high school through retirement in 2022. In 2012 and while still working at Panoramic, Ted also became involved working with his cousin in the real estate foreclosure market. Since the economy was not ideal back in 2012, Ted and his cousin began buying bank-owned foreclosures and renovating them for rental properties. Fast forward to 2023, and Ted feels the time is now for him to start helping others discover that same path to success he finds himself enjoying today.
